Sometimes I Trust in the Wrong Things

July 21, 2013 by Brian | 4 Comments

Hidden Nuggets Series #2 – “Some trust in chariots and some in horses; but we will remember the name of the Lord our God.” – Psalm 20:7

HorsesMisplaced trust. I’ve done that before in an effort to help me get by.

Friendships. Money and material possessions. Love. And, of course, my wide array of incredible talents. (OK…it may not be a wide array, but I have a few there.)

I love friendships. I enjoy money and appreciate the material possessions in my care. I love being in love. When my talents are used to accomplish something great, I’m thrilled.

There is a big problem however, with all these and other external things I put my complete trust in.

It seems like they always let me down. No matter how hard I try to gain satisfaction by placing my trust in these things, I always end up disappointed at some level. It’s never quite fulfilling enough.

Chariots and horses were a sign of strength and wealth in the Bible. King David surely had an abundance of each. If anyone were in a position to place trust in his own might and his own possessions it would have been him. Yet we don’t see that attitude here in this verse.

Here David shares with us a secret formula. He realizes what we all need to understand – that the satisfying Christian life is not built on wealth, power, or our personal talents, but by trusting in God as our provider and relying on Him for our daily needs. That needs to be a predominant thought that races through our mind multiple times a day.

Somebody once coined the phrase “In God We Trust.” I wonder why we don’t practice that idea more often?

What are you placing your trust in today?

I always do this – put my trust in others, money, etc. And in the end, I always get disappointed. But He never disappoints – whether I trust in Him or not.

I choose to trust. Thanks for this great reflection!

I often wonder how much more He would bless if He received my trust all the time. I definitely have a long way to go here.

“He realizes what we all need to understand – that the satisfying Christian life is not built on wealth, power, or our personal talents, but by trusting in God as our provider and relying on Him for our daily needs.” Such wise words, and pretty much applicable to anyone’s life. I think we are all constantly placing our trust in things other than God.
